(October 2010) Salehy is a small village, in 10km from Mahanoro, in the East coast of Madagascar. People there are living principally with fishing, agriculture, handicraft, “betsa” manufacturing (an alcoholic traditional beverage) and a small part of tourism. The village is surrounded by waters. The Pangalans channel in the West, the river Mangoro in the South and the Indian Ocean in the East, preceded by a small natural swimming pool called “Dobo masina”, means “Salted pool”. it was salted because of the ocean, it could reach there during the night even it’s in a kilometer far from there Historically, through the oral tradition, the name of Salehy came from French people who passed there. they drank water from “Dobo masina”, it was salted, they said “Ohh! C’est salé” (it’s salted). The name was after that Salehy. In the East is the confluence of river Mangoro, Pangalanes and the Ocean. This confluence always changes its place but Salehy is always there. and in the north, there is also a small lake named “Salehy be” (Big Salehy). Before going there, ask riparian people what you shouldn’t do there. The lake is still abounded of taboo. It’s overflowed of fishes but no one take it from there. If you want to go to continue to the East, you must take the “bac”. It’s a kind of a ferry, very simple one. Sometimes the motor breaks down, and tourist can enjoy the beauty of Salehy. Sometimes also they push it manually. But this way is dangerous because of the confluence flow. Salehy has a very calm beach but be careful about the waves. Surfers can take profit there. Salehy is always victim of every passing cyclone. People there don’t build strong house because they say that, it will be destroyed again by the cyclone next year. The truth is that they don’t have enough resource to build strong house. People in Salehy, same as people from many villages in Madagascar, now days, are living in extreme poverty that you cannot imagine at all. This article has not been added to any categories.
