The new band was selected in 1982 by Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records to appear on a label's compilation album, entitled U.S. Metal Volume 2.[2] The song Starr sent in for the compilation was "Children of the Storm", a track that would set the tone and be the template for the band’s subsequent compositions. After only two albums, Virgin Steele of 1981 and Guardians of the Flame of 1982, Starr left Virgin Steele in 1983, because of musical differences with the band’s frontman and other main songwriter David DeFeis.[2][3] In 1984, Starr recorded the solo album Out of the Darkness with former Riot vocalist Rhett Forrester and The Rods’ drummer Carl Canedy, trying to schedule a tour under the name Virgin Steele,[4] claiming ownership of the name against DeFeis. The judges saw it differently and the name of the band remained to David DeFeis, who guided Virgin Steele to success and to international recognition. Jack Starr had less luck and success. He changed the name of his band to Jack Starr's Burning Starr and between 1984 and 1989 he produced albums both solo and with the band. The music of those albums is classic American eighties metal that, despite touring in the US and abroad, gained little success. The rise in the liking of the American audience of new bands, like Metallica, Poison, Mötley Crüe, and new metal genres at the end of the 80’s made Burnin Starr's recordings appear almost obsolete, reducing their fan base greatly.[3] In 1989 the band dissolved and Jack Starr joined short lived bands like Strider, Smoke Stack Lightning and others.[4] Subsequently Starr took a musical break. In 2003 he returned to the scene, founding a new band called Guardians of the Flame, which released only the little-known and rather old-fashioned album Under a Savage Sky.[5] More recently, Starr once again assembled a group of musicians for a new incarnation of Burning Starr, that performed at the Magic Circle Festival 2008 and released the album Defiance on the Manowar's label Magic Circle Music in 2009.[6] Starr is also busy with another musical project, the Jack Starr Blues Band, founded in 2006. The band play blues in clubs and festivals. Starr currently lives in Palm Bay, Florida and is recording both metal and blues music.
