He is the current manager of the Galway under-21 hurling team. Cunningham played his club hurling with St. Thomas's and at inter-county level with Galway. He was a key member of the forwards on the latter team during the 'golden age' of the late 1980s and collected back-to-back All-Ireland titles as well as a National Hurling League title. In retirement from playing Cunningham has become involved in team management. He has enjoyed his greatest successes at club level, guiding Roscommon's St. Brigid's to three county titles in-a-row as well as a Connacht in 2006, while also steering Westmeath's Garrycastle to a county title in 2009. Cunningham also had a spell as manager of the Roscommon senior hurling team, while in March 2009 he was appointed manager of the Galway under-21 hurling team.[1] References ^ "Cunningham takes Galway under 21 reins".
