Petrie Ice Rises (70°33′S 72°12′W / 70.55°S 72.2°W / -70.55; -72.2) is a north-south line of about ten ice rises in Wilkins Ice Shelf, to the west of Alexander Island. Seen from the air on a British Antarctic Survey (BAS) radio echo sounding flight around Alexander Island, February 11, 1967, and later accurately positioned from U.S. Landsat imagery. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1980 after David L. Petrie, BAS and Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) electronic technician, about 1966-70, who was on the flight.  This article incorporates public domain material from the United States Geological Survey document "Petrie Ice Rises" (content from the Geographic Names Information System).
